GIF and WebP export
ShippedDGgdarko24 August 2026
Summary
Turn a screen recording into an animated GIF or WebP that plays inline almost anywhere: chats, issues, pull requests and docs. Trim the recording first, then export just the part that matters.
What you can do
- Export the trimmed range as an animated GIF or an animated WebP, straight from the trim editor's toolbar.
- Choose the frame rate (1 to 50 fps), the maximum size, the quality and how often it loops, or let it loop forever.
- Make WebP exports lossless when every pixel counts.
- Copy the exported file to the clipboard, or upload it to one of your upload destinations and get the link.
- Tick "Don't ask again" to skip the options dialog. Snim remembers your choices for each format, and Export options brings the dialog back.
How it works
- The defaults are 10 fps, at most 1200 px on the longest edge, quality 75, looping forever.
- GIFs get a carefully built color palette, so screen text stays crisp instead of muddy.
- WebP keeps full color and is usually much smaller than a GIF of the same clip.
- The editor shows the export's progress, and a copied export is kept in your recordings folder so the clipboard always points at a real file.
Platforms
- Windows: Supported.
- macOS: Supported.
- Linux: Supported in the packages, the tarball and the Flatpak.
Not in this version
- No sound: GIF and WebP have no audio track, so keep the MP4 when sound matters.
- No cropping, speed changes or captions while exporting.
- No other animated formats, such as APNG or WebM.
