Crop tool in the editor

PlannedDGgdarko31 July 2026

Summary

Crop a screenshot inside the editor after you take it, without starting over. Cut away the extra desktop, frame just the dialog you care about, and keep your annotations and backdrop as they are.

What you will be able to do

  • Pick the Crop tool from the editor toolbar, or press C, like the other single-key tools.
  • Drag the edges and corners of a crop frame over the screenshot. The part outside is dimmed, and the new size shows in pixels as you drag.
  • Press Enter to apply, or Esc to leave the screenshot as it was.
  • Hold Shift to keep the current proportions, or pick a ratio such as 1:1, 4:3 or 16:9.
  • Change your mind later: crop again to widen the frame back out, all the way to the original screenshot, or use Undo.
  • Copy, save and upload the cropped image, with your backdrop wrapped around it.

How it works

  • Before a capture you can already fine-tune the selection with its handles; the crop tool covers everything after that, in the editor.
  • Cropping hides what is outside the frame instead of throwing it away, so nothing is lost while you edit.
  • Annotations stay where you drew them. Anything outside the crop is simply left out of the result.
  • The backdrop's padding, rounded corners and shadow follow the new size.
  • Each crop is one step in the undo history, like any other edit.

Platforms

  • Windows: Same as everywhere: the editor is shared by all platforms.
  • macOS: Same as everywhere.
  • Linux: Same as everywhere, including the Flatpak.

Not in this version

  • No rotating or straightening.
  • No cropping of recordings in the trim editor.
  • No growing the canvas past the original screenshot; use the backdrop's padding for extra space.

Status

  • Crop frame with handles, Enter to apply and Esc to cancel
  • Undo, redo and re-cropping back to the full screenshot
  • Annotations and the backdrop follow the crop
  • Aspect ratio lock and ratio presets
