Linux packages, Flatpak and Homebrew
ShippedDGgdarko23 July 2026
Summary
Install and update Snim the way your system expects: a .deb or .rpm on Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora, a Flatpak on any Linux distribution, and a Homebrew cask on macOS. No building from source and no hunting for dependencies.
What you can do
- Install the
.debon Ubuntu 22.04+ and Debian 12+, or the.rpmon Fedora 42+, and letaptordnfpull in the GStreamer pieces that recording needs. - Install the Flatpak on any distribution with one command, and keep it current with
flatpak update. - On a Mac, run
brew install --cask snimdev/tap/snim, andbrew upgradekeeps it current. - On other distributions, run the install script, which installs under
~/.localwithout root, or unpack the portable tarball anywhere. - Pick x86_64 or ARM: the packages, the tarball and the Flatpak come for both.
How it works
- The
.deband.rpminstall Snim to/opt/snimwith asnimcommand, a menu entry and icons. Qt comes bundled; GStreamer comes from your distribution. - On KDE Plasma, the menu entry the packages and the install script ship is what lets KWin give Snim instant, dialog-free screenshots from the first launch.
- The Flatpak comes from Snim's own signed repository at dl.snim.dev. The install command adds it as the
snimremote and fetches the KDE runtime from Flathub by itself. - The install script checks every download against the release checksums, and running it again updates Snim.
Platforms
- Windows: The installer and the portable zip, covered by Windows support.
- macOS: The Homebrew cask installs the same signed and notarized app as the DMG: Apple silicon, macOS 15 Sequoia or newer.
- Linux:
.debfor Debian and Ubuntu,.rpmfor Fedora, and the Flatpak anywhere. On ARM, the packages need Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 13 or newer. On openSUSE, use the Flatpak, since the.rpmexpects Fedora's package names. In the Flatpak, KDE screenshots go through the desktop's screenshot portal instead of KWin directly, and Snim saves into Pictures/Screenshots and Videos/Snim. Recording needs PipeWire andxdg-desktop-portaleverywhere.
Not in this version
- Not on Flathub yet: the Flatpak comes from dl.snim.dev.
- No APT or DNF repository: to update, install the newer
.debor.rpmthe same way. - No AUR package yet; that has its own roadmap entry.
- No build for Intel Macs.
Status
- Shipped in 1.0.0-rc.1
