Pause and resume recording

ShippedDGgdarko27 July 2026

Summary

Pause a recording while you look something up or set up the next step, then pick up where you left off. The pause is cut out of the file, so the video plays straight through with no frozen frames and no dead air.

What you can do

  • Pause and resume from the floating recording controls, as often as you like.
  • Watch the timer hold still while paused, so it always shows how much you have recorded.
  • Keep system audio and the microphone in sync: sound pauses together with the picture.
  • Stop while paused to finish the recording and open it in the trim editor.
  • Pause area and window recordings alike, with or without the webcam bubble.

How it works

  • While you record, a small pill at the top of the screen shows a red dot, the elapsed time, a Pause button and a Stop button. Pause turns into Resume while the recording is paused.
  • While paused, Snim drops the incoming video and audio instead of writing it.
  • On resume, the recording continues from the moment you paused, so the two parts join without a gap.

Platforms

  • Windows: Supported.
  • macOS: Supported.
  • Linux: Supported on Wayland and X11, in the packages, the tarball and the Flatpak.

Not in this version

  • Pause and Resume live on the recording controls only: there is no hotkey or tray menu entry for them yet.
  • The cut is seamless but not marked: there is no chapter or marker where a pause was.

Status

  • Shipped in 1.0.0-rc.1
