Quick Access Overlay and after-capture actions
PlannedDGgdarko10 October 2026
Summary
Decide what happens after each screenshot. Copy it, save it or upload it, then open the editor, show a small preview card in a corner of the screen, or show nothing at all. Most captures are copy and paste or save and share, and for those the editor is a detour; the card keeps the next step one click away without getting in your way.
What you will be able to do
- Pick after-capture actions in Settings: copy the image, save it to your screenshot folder, or upload it with your default destination and copy the link. Any combination works.
- Choose what to show next: the editor (as today), the Quick Access Overlay, or nothing.
- Use the overlay card: Copy and Save in the middle, close, annotate and upload in the corners, and a click on the thumbnail opens the editor.
- Drag the thumbnail straight into a chat, a browser or a file manager.
- Take several captures in a row: the cards stack in the corner, newest closest, up to five.
- Let cards close on their own after 5, 10 or 30 seconds, or keep them until you close them.
How it works
- Actions run in a fixed order: save, copy, upload, then the editor or the card. With both copy and upload on, the link ends up on the clipboard.
- The card appears in a corner of the screen you captured (bottom-left unless you pick another). It never takes keyboard focus, and its timer waits while your pointer is over it.
- Copy, Save and Upload show their result right on the card: Copied, Saved, upload progress, then Link copied.
- Cards step aside during the next capture, so they never end up in it.
- Settings will not let you turn everything off, so every capture goes somewhere.
Platforms
- Windows: The card floats in a screen corner and stays out of recordings.
- macOS: The card floats in a screen corner and follows you across Spaces.
- Linux: The card works on X11 and on Wayland desktops with layer-shell, such as KDE Plasma, Sway, Hyprland and COSMIC. GNOME has no way to keep a card in a screen corner, so there Snim shows a desktop notification with the thumbnail and Copy, Save and Edit actions instead.
Not in this version
- No separate actions for area, window and full-screen captures.
- The OCR text snip and recordings keep their own flow; recordings join the overlay in a later phase.
- Pinning a capture as a floating, always-on-top image comes in a later phase.
Status
- After-capture actions: copy, save and upload, then the editor or nothing
- Quick Access Overlay on Windows, macOS, X11 and layer-shell Wayland
- Notification fallback on GNOME
- Extras: pinned screenshots and recordings in the overlay
