Screenshot key opens Snim

ShippedDGgdarko10 October 2026

Summary

Your keyboard's screenshot key can open Snim instead of the system tool: Print Screen on Windows and Linux, Shift+Cmd+3, 4 and 5 on macOS. Snim frees the key for you and gives it back just as easily. The default hotkeys now also stay clear of everyday app and browser shortcuts.

What you can do

  • Say yes when Snim offers the key on first run, or use Settings > Hotkeys > Screenshot key at any time.
  • Give the key back to the system tool (Snipping Tool, macOS, Spectacle or GNOME) with one button.
  • Start from defaults built around the screenshot key: Ctrl+Print captures an area, Ctrl+Alt+Print a window and Ctrl+Shift+Print records an area on Windows and Linux. On macOS, Option+Shift+Cmd+4, 3 and 5 capture an area, the full screen and record an area.
  • See right in Settings when a hotkey could not be registered, or which app already uses it, with a button to take it over.

How it works

  • On Windows and Linux, Print Screen goes to Capture Area. On macOS, Shift+Cmd+3, 4 and 5 go to Capture Full Screen, Capture Area and Record Area.
  • Snim remembers what it changed, so giving the key back restores your earlier setup. Hotkeys you changed yourself after the swap stay yours.
  • The first-run offer only appears where the swap is a single click, and "Don't ask again" means exactly that.

Platforms

  • Windows: One click. On Windows 11, Print Screen opens Snipping Tool by default; Snim switches that off. If Print Screen still opens Snipping Tool, sign out and back in.
  • macOS: One click on most Macs. Otherwise Snim shows where to turn off the system shortcuts in System Settings. A log out may be needed for the change to stick.
  • Linux: One click on KDE Plasma, where Snim takes Print Screen from Spectacle, also in the Flatpak. On GNOME 48 or newer, Snim frees Print Screen from GNOME's screenshot tool, then you set Capture Area to Print Screen in Settings > Apps > Snim > Global Shortcuts; in the Flatpak, Snim guides you through both steps. Global hotkeys on Linux need the desktop's global shortcuts portal.

Not in this version

  • No screenshot key takeover on Sway, Hyprland and other desktops yet.
  • On Windows and Linux, only Capture Area moves to Print Screen; the other actions keep their own hotkeys.

Status

  • Shipped in 1.0.0-rc.2
