Windows support
ShippedDGgdarko19 July 2026
Summary
Snim runs natively on Windows 10 and 11, with the same capture, annotation, recording, OCR and upload features as on Linux and macOS. Install it for your user without admin rights, or keep a portable copy in any folder.
What you can do
- Capture an area, a window or the whole screen from the tray or a global hotkey, then annotate, add a backdrop, copy, save or upload.
- Record an area or a single window with system audio and your microphone (plus the webcam bubble for areas), pause and resume, then trim and export to MP4, GIF or WebP.
- Grab text from the screen with OCR. The English language data is included, so it works offline.
- Upload to S3-compatible storage, SFTP or FTP. Passwords and secret keys are kept in Windows Credential Manager.
- Set your own global hotkeys in Settings, and open the tray menu with a left click, the way Windows users expect.
- Since 1.0.0-rc.2, let Print Screen open Snim instead of Snipping Tool, in one click.
How it works
- Recordings use Windows Graphics Capture and are saved as MP4 (H.264). Snim uses your graphics card's H.264 encoder when there is one (NVIDIA, Intel or AMD) and falls back to a software encoder.
- Snim keeps its own recording controls out of the video, while the webcam bubble stays in.
- The installer sets Snim up for your user by default and can install for all users instead. Remove it from Settings, Apps, like any other program.
- The portable zip runs from any folder and keeps its settings in
snim.ininext tosnim.exe.
Platforms
- Windows: Windows 10 and 11, x64. Screen recording needs Windows 10 version 2004 or newer. On Windows 10, the system draws a yellow border around the recorded area; Windows 11 lets Snim turn it off.
- macOS: Already supported before Windows arrived; nothing changes there.
- Linux: Already supported before Windows arrived; nothing changes there.
Not in this version
- The installer and app are not code-signed yet, so SmartScreen asks first: click More info, then Run anyway.
- No native ARM64 build yet.
- No winget package yet.
- Recording needs Windows Graphics Capture, which can be missing in some remote desktop or virtual machine sessions.
Status
- Shipped in 1.0.0-rc.1
